Checkpoint Looks for Drunken Drivers

Sheriff's deputies screen drivers Friday night on Poway Road.

A DUI checkpoint was conducted by sheriff’s deputies Friday night in the 12500 block of Poway Road. One driver was arrested for suspicion of DUI and one person was arrested on a DUI warrant, according to the sheriff’s department.

Two drivers were arrested for having a suspended driver’s license and 21 vehicles were impounded during the detail. The sheriff’s department said 862 of the 1,208 vehicles that encountered the checkpoint were screened by deputies looking for signs of impairment and driver’s license issues. Forty nine vehicles were sent to a secondary-inspection area, where seven field sobriety tests were given.

Deputies also issued 21 citations for driver’s license violations, two citations for possession of marijuana and one citation for open container.

This detail was part of a nationwide crackdown on impaired driving from Aug. 19 to Sept. 5 known as Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

“All too often, innocent, law‐abiding people suffer tragic consequences and the loss of loved ones due to this careless disregard for human life. We will be especially vigilant during these high‐risk times when impaired drivers are most likely to be on our roads,” San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said in a statement.
