Alert Youngsters Keep School From Suffering Fire Damage

A group of Cub Scouts spotted and alerted school staffers that someone was trying to lit a fire behind a Turtleback Elementary School building.

A group of alert Cub Scouts helped keep a local school from suffering fire damage by alerting teachers that someone was trying to set a fire at the campus.

The incident was reported about 5:30 p.m. Dec. 11. The scouts were meeting at the campus when they spotted a younger male behind a multi-purpose room, said Diego Police Department's community relations officer Shannah Kanoa.

It appeared to the youngsters as if the person was trying to set fire to some papers and clothing, possibly children’s clothing. The Scouts alerted staffers at the school who tried to speak to the person, Kanoa said.

However the suspicious male sped off on a skateboard, Kanoa said.

“They did what they were supposed to,” Kanoa said about the sharp-eyed Cut Cub Scouts. They notified responsible adults. The damage to the school was very minimal.”

San Diego Metro Arson Strike Team, or MAST team, is investigating the case. Police encourage anyone with information to call (858) 531-2000.
