2 Arrested at DUI Checkpoint at Northbound Route 67 and Poway Road

No drunken drivers were found, but inspections of 748 vehicles found motorists with license violations.

Two people were arrested in an overnight DUI checkpoint at the state Route 67 intersection with Poway Road—but not for drunken driving.

The arrests at the northbound stop on Route 67 were for driving with a suspended license, according to Deputy Aaron Meleen of the Poway station of the Sheriff’s Department.

The checkpoint operated from 6 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday, where 1,224 vehicles were stopped, Meleen said.

Some 748 vehicles were screened in the primary inspection area and 35 in the secondary inspection area.

“There were a total of three DUI evaluations conducted with zero DUI arrests made,” Meleen said Sunday. “Two citations were issued for driving on a suspended license; [and] one citation was issued for driving on a suspended License for a prior DUI.”

Twelve citations were issued for driving without a valid driver's license and three citations were issued for not having a driver’s license in possession, he said.

“There were two arrests for driving on a suspended driver’s license with the arrestees being booked into jail. Four vehicles were towed for the drivers who were cited/arrested for driving on a suspended license.”

Meleen said one vehicle was towed after a driver cited for not having a valid license was unable to provide a driver who possessed a valid license by the time the checkpoint was closed.
