Why Let Time Have All the Fun? Who is Poway’s Person of the Year?

This poll is in two parts: Nominate your Person of the Year and we’ll have a runoff next month.

On Dec. 14, Time magazine will announce its Person of the Year—which isn’t guaranteed to be an actual man or woman. But in the run-up, the magazine has invited votes on 40 candidates, including President Barack Obama, Gabby Douglas and Kim Jong Un. Other options include The Mars Rover and the Higgs Boson Particle. But who cares about the same-old same-old? Who is Poway’s Person of the Year—the man or woman who, in Timespeak, “most influenced the news this year for better or worse”? We won’t preselect your picks. But the ones most often mentioned in the comments (and tell us why) will have a runoff in a month.

My vote for "Poway Person of the Year" is certain members of the Poway City Council & the City Staff. The council consists of some "really good people"! I am impressed to see Dave Grosch at so many Poway events. He is a true servant to this city and I was very impressed with a recent published note where a Powegian "caught" Dave out in a vacant lot picking up trash (no media around). I am also continually impressed with Jim Cunningham, who works tirelessly for the city. It is easy to drive around Poway and see evidence of his work including his efforts to move the William's Syndrome Walk for Awareness to Poway in 2012. John Mullin and his wife Susie quietly focus on helping others, including military families and people with special needs. And, I am impressed with Steve Vaus and his dedication to Poway and especially for his adding "... so help me God" to the end of his swearing in oathl. He cares about our Poway teens and also does amazing work producing Carols by Candlelight to raise money for Rady's Children's Hospital. And, to see the Poway City Staff, led by Penny Riley, who work tirelessly for each Powegian has me standing in awe! I hope Poway will celebrate a positive influence to our community this year! However, I do fear that the most noteworthy item for Poway in 2012 is a negative one. Unfortunately, the big Poway news event in 2012 was the fact that Poway's jewel (PUSD) was stolen and replaced with a billion dollar debt.
