Poway Man Killed on Route 56 Bike Path

Nicholas John Venuto was pronounced dead after being struck by an SUV on Tuesday.

A bicyclist who was killed after being struck by an SUV on Tuesday has been identified as Nicholas John Venuto of Poway.

According to a report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, Venuto was riding along the Route 56 bike path when he was hit by a Ford Escape, after the "driver of the SUV loss control of the vehicle and veered up an embankment and into the bike lane."

A second bicyclist, identified as San Diego County YMCA President Baron Herdelin-Doherty, and the driver were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, but Venuto was pronounced dead at the scene.

Venuto, 40, is survived by his wife and two children. He worked at Sapphire Energy.

According to the examiner's office, drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been a factor in the crash, and no charges are pending against the driver.
