Start Smart: Class to Drive Home Dangers of Drinking and Driving

The Sheriff's Department expects 400 teens and their parents to attend Thursday's class at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.

Students from and other area schools will be attending a Start Smart class Thursday night, organized by the Sheriff’s Department to educate new drivers and their parents about the dangers teens face when they get behind the wheel.

The class will be in session between 6-8 p.m. at the and will feature speakers whose lives were forever changed because of a fatal DUI crash.

A wrecked SUV from a DUI crash will be on display, allowing teens to see the carnage that can result from drinking and driving.

Speaking at the class will be the mother of 17-year-old Poway High student Veronica Aguirre, killed in a DUI crash in December 2009. Also sharing her tragic tale will be Erin Limonchi, whose mother was killed by a drunken teen driver in Santee in September 2009.

The Sheriff’s Department started the Start Smart classes in June 2010 to educate new drivers and their parents about the responsibilities that come with driving and the consequences of bad decisions. The restrictions of a provisional license and social host rules will also be covered.

The Sheriff’s Department estimates that around 400 people will attend Thursday’s class, which is required for a student to park on campus.
