Boardwalk Craft Market in Old Poway Park

The Boardwalk Craft Market returns to Old Poway Park on Saturday, February 1, 2014. This year the Poway Arts & Crafts Guild's  Boardwalk Craft Market celebrates 22 years in Old Poway Park.  Located on the big covered porch around the Historical Museum and the Hamburger Factory restaurant, the Boardwalk Craft Market will continue year round on the first Saturday of the month in February, March, April and May. In June, July and August, the Craft Market expands to the first and third Saturday and starting Labor Day Weekend, it expands further to every Saturday until Christmas. Hours are 8 am to 2 pm. Old Poway Park is located at 14134 Midland Road in Poway. For more information call (858) 486-3497 or see www.poway.org/oldpowaypark and click on Craft Market.

The Boardwalk Craft Market began in 1993 as a companion to Old Poway Park's Farmers Market. The Poway Arts & Crafts Guild worked with the City of Poway and the living history goals of Old Poway Park to create an event which would respect those goals and add to the education and enjoyment of park visitors.

The market features original work by individual artists and craftsmen. Participants are juried on a high standard of craftsmanship, creativity and appropriateness to Old Poway Park's living history theme. Their work must show a connection to traditional arts and crafts done at the turn of the 20th Century. At that time the Arts & Crafts Movement inspired a handcraft revival that influenced architecture, jewelry, fashion and home furnishings around the world. Participants in the Boardwalk Craft Market demonstrate the enduring value of handcrafts and, in the spirit of the Arts & Crafts Movement, create "beautiful and useful things" relevant to today's lifestyles.

Visitors to the Boardwalk Craft Market will find artists and craftsmen showing works in wood, metal, glass, clay, fabric, fibers, painting, drawing, soap making and photography. Demonstrations vary at each market and may include: spinning, metalworking, beading, gourd carving, quilting and wood turning. Approximately 35 to 40 artists participate each year with each artist setting their own schedule of attendance.

Follow the signs around and through the Farmers Market to Old Poway Park. There's lots of parking inside, just steps away from the Boardwalk Craft Market. The next Craft Market will be Saturday, March 1, 2014.
