Weather Outlook: What to Expect in April

April weather trends in San Diego County, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures continue to rise slowly through April with a monthly mean of 62.6 degrees, which is 2.6 degrees above that of March. The average daily maximum is 68.7 degrees and the average daily minimum is 56.4 degrees.

In some Aprils, there have been days with hot, dry winds with temperatures well in excess of 80 degrees. On 11 such occurrences, 90 degrees or higher has been recorded at the National Weather Service. The extreme temperatures for the month are 98 degrees in 1989 and 39 degrees in 1875.

Showers rather than prolonged rains have been the rule during the month of April. These rainfall events have occurred on an average of five days during the month.

Normal rainfall for the month is 0.75 inches. However, in 1926, an exceptionally high total of 5.37 inches was recorded with 3.23 inches falling in one day. This event has been one of the heaviest 24-hour rainfall amounts ever measured in the city. Only three times since 1850 has the month been without measurable rainfall.

Strong winds have been of short duration and rarely over 30 mph, but in 1915 a speed of 46 mph was recorded at the National Weather Service.

As a rule, April ushers marine low clouds during the nights and mornings, which is characteristic of the summer and fall months, but the percentage of sunshine is little affected by the cloudiness.

The average of 66 percent of possible sunshine for April is only slightly below that of preceding months. Clear days average 10, partly cloudy average 10, and cloudy days average 10. There is an average of one day of heavy fog. The relative humidity averages 76 percent in the early morning, 60 percent near noon, and 59 percent in the late afternoon.
