USS Carl Vinson Returns to San Diego

More than 5,500 sailors return home after a seven-month deployment and several historic missions.

1. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County decreased Thursday for the 40th time in 41 days, falling 1 cent to $3.906, the lowest since March 5. The average price is 3.9 cents less than one week ago and 29.4 cents lower than one month ago but 84.2 cents higher than one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

2. The USS Carl Vinson returned home Wednesday from a history-making 6 1/2-month deployment that included the burial at sea of terrorist Osama bin Laden, but the aircraft carrier's crew are expected to enjoy a relatively short respite. The ship's 5,500 sailors and Marines were greeted by a large crowd along
the pier at Naval Air Station North Island, including babies born to 76 crew members while they were away. See the full story .

3. District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis warned San Diegans Wednesday about a scam targeting the elderly, in which an imposter poses as a grandchild in trouble in a foreign country and in need of cash. Since the first of the year, the District Attorney's Victim Assistance Division has noticed an uptick in crime reports involving elderly citizens targeted by criminals using the so-called "Grandma Scam,'' Dumanis said.
