8 People Accused of Sports Bribery Plead Not Guilty

Eight people accused in a sports bribery ring that allegedly recruited college basketball players to fix games have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges in federal court in San Diego.

Former University of San Diego assistant basketball coach Thaddeus Brown and two former USD players Brandon Johnson and Brandon Dowdy are among 10 people named in a federal indictment unsealed Monday.

2. Protests are scheduled today at San Diego State University and other California State University campuses against proposed cuts and fee increases in next year's budget. The demonstrations are being organized by the California Faculty Association, which is demanding fair employee contracts, affordable access to higher education, cuts to the CSU administration and the generation of additional revenue.

3. Workers at the San Onofre nuclear plant drilled Tuesday on shutting down the two reactors and securing the fuel rods as part of a biennial exercise that took on new significance in light of the disaster in Japan. Southern California Edison, which operates the plant in San Clemente, also signaled its intent to ask the state Public Utilities Commission to fund some $64 million in studies aimed at better preparing workers to a radiological accident.
