UCSD Named "Best Value" College

UC San Diego was named the 10th best value public college in the nation by Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine, the university announced Tuesday.

The university moved up two spots from last year's list, which ranks schools based on cost and financial aid, average student debt, competitiveness, graduation rates and academic support.

USS McClusky Leaves San Diego

The guided-missile frigate USS McClusky will leave San Diego Wednesday for a deployment to the Eastern Pacific Ocean to combat transnational organized crime.

The USS McClusky completed more than 20 drug seizures since the ship first deployed to the Eastern Pacific in 2000, which included disrupting cocaine shipments to the United States in 2009, Navy officials said.

The ship will deploy with a crew of 30 officers and 210 enlisted sailors who will conduct operations with Joint Interagency Task Force South, based in Key West, Fla., and Coast Guard District 11, based in Alameda, Calif., officials said.

On the ship will be two choppers from a Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron to provide aerial support, and a U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment will conduct boardings and other law enforcement operations, officials said.

"I am impressed with how hard the crew has worked over the past few months. We have been able to seamlessly integrate both our Coast Guard and HSL- 49 detachments, focused as one team, on one goal," said the ship's skipper, Commander Darren W. Glaser.
