UCSD Kept Out of Big West Conference

Commissioner Dennis Farrell said the directors heard a presentation from the school but took no action on its request for membership.

1. UC San Diego was not invited to join the Big West Conference when the league's Board of Directors met this week, conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell said Thursday. Farrell said the directors heard a presentation from the school on Monday, but took no action on its request for membership. That throws a major hurdle in the way of UCSD officials who want to move their athletic teams from Division II to Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

2. Federal officers staffing San Ysidro Port of Entry arrested a 56-year-old San Diego resident Thursday after he allegedly drove a 78-pound load of methamphetamine into the country from Mexico. The man entered the government inspection station behind the wheel of a brown Chevrolet Malibu about 12:30 a.m., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection public affairs.

3. It will be partly cloudy throughout the county Friday with patchy fog in the morning. Highs will be 68 to 78 near the foothills in Poway.
