Supervisors Vote to Oppose Proposed Truck Legislation

The Safe Efficient Transportation Act would give states the option to allow trucks to carry up to 97,000 pounds of cargo.

1. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday to oppose legislation that would allow heavier trucks on America's roadways. The Safe Efficient Transportation Act, which has been introduced in Congress, would give states the option to allow trucks to carry up to 97,000 pounds of cargo if they added a sixth axle. The current limit is 80,000 pounds.

2. Beaches along the California coast received generally high marks for water quality, but several locations in San Diego County received failing grades, according to a report released Wednesday by the environmental group Heal the Bay. The largest concentration of polluted beaches in the county were near the border, including Border Field State Park, the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Reserve and the south end of Imperial Beach, according to the group's 2010-11 Beach Report Card.

3. The Pentagon released the name today of an Army staff sergeant from Chula Vista killed by an improvised explosive device this week in Afghanistan. Kristofferson B. Lorenzo, 33, and three fellow soldiers died Monday during an attack by enemy forces in Kunar Province, according to the Department of Defense.
