Free Summer Movies in the Park Begins Saturday

Poway's Summer Movies in the Park kicks off with "Kung Fu Panda 2" at Poway Community Park.

What does a kung fu panda, a supervillain alien and a pet chameleon have in common? You can watch them all for free this summer!

The Summer Movies in the Park series kicks off Saturday with the animated film Kung Fu Panda 2 at Poway Community Park.

Emily Fox, the recreation supervisor for the city of Poway, encouraged Powegians to arrive early to picnic, play recreation games and enjoy the park.

“This is a fun and affordable opportunity to bring the community together to enjoy a family-friendly movie under the stars,” Fox said.

In addition to Kung Fu Panda 2 on Saturday, Poway Community Park will host Megamind on Aug. 18 and Rango on Sept. 1. The movies will be shown on a giant, outdoor screen.

The county’s Summer Movies in the Park series launched in 2007. Last year, approximately 16,500 people attended 42 free movies throughout the county. More than 20,000 people are expected at this summer’s 55 movie events.

“Our mission is to provide high quality recreation experiences for San Diego County,” said Christine Lafontant, district manager of the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation. “Summer Movies in the Park is one of our most popular special events and it is becoming a San Diego tradition.”

All movies begin at dusk and are subject to change. Parking is free.
