Spreckels Mansion on the Market

The mansion where Rebecca Zahau was found dead is being sold.

1. A 103-year-old Coronado mansion at the heart of a controversial death investigation is being sold. The historic 27-room Spreckels mansion on Ocean Boulevard is where local authorities say Rebecca Zahau, 32, committed suicide by hanging herself last July. Zahau's family is fighting the ruling and has hired both an attorney and a prominent pathologist, Dr. Cyril Wecht, to investigate the death. Read the full story on Coronado.Patch.com.

2. A surfer's report of seeing an 8- to 10-foot shark in the breakers at Beacons Beach prompted authorities to advise people to stay out of the water Monday afternoon. The man told lifeguards shortly before 3 p.m. that a great white shark approached and circled him in about five feet of water, Encinitas Marine Safety Capt. Larry Giles said.

3. Memorial Preparatory for Scholars and Athletes, named Monday as one of 34 NFL PLAY 60 Super Schools, will receive a $10,000 grant and a visit from Chargers tight end Randy McMichael. The NFL PLAY 60 program is designed to improve the health and wellness of students by getting them to exercise for 60 minutes every day. The grant money can be used on health and wellness programs, or equipment.
