Showers, Thunderstorms Expected in San Diego County

The Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for the mountains and deserts until 9 p.m.

1. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in San Diego County Tuesday, prompting a flash flood watch for the mountains and deserts. According to the National Weather Service, an upper level disturbance off the coast of Southern California will bring showers and thunderstorms to the region as early as Tuesday morning. The Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for the mountains and deserts until 9 p.m. Fresh burn areas will be particularly susceptible to flash flooding, NWS meteorologists said. Temperatures around the county are expected to peak in the low 70s to low 80s, except in the deserts, where a high of 94 degrees is expected.

2. Patients from Rady Children's Hospital will have a chance to interact with bottlenose dolphins Tuesday under the eye of a Sea World dolphin trainer who survived her own battle with cancer. Sea World will host about 10 patients between the ages of 10 and 18, who
will touch, feed and interact with dolphins, assisted by trainer Joy Clausen, according to park spokeswoman Kelly Terry.

3. Two men accused in the shooting deaths of two San Diego-based sailors in Otay Mesa 18 years ago are scheduled to appear at the
downtown courthouse Tuesday for a preliminary hearing intended to determine if they will have to stand trial. Edward Jesus Elias and Leopoldo Castro Chavez II, both 35, are charged with murder and special circumstances in the deaths of 20-year-old Eugene "Cliff'' Ellis and 23-year-old Keith Combs, who were stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. Both defendants face 50 years to life in prison without parole if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Andrea Freshwater. Since Elias and Chavez were both 17 at the time of the killings, they are not eligible for the death penalty, she said.
