Sentencing Scheduled for Man Responsible for Marine's Death

Oscar Tinoco pleaded guilty last month for a chain-reaction crash that killed a Marine in 2009.

1. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Christopher Dustrude Thursday, a convicted Montana sex offender accused of failing to register as a sex offender in San Diego.

2. A 63-year-old Oklahoma woman in town to visit her son narrowly escaped injury when her rental car became stuck on train tracks in San Diego thanks to bad directions she received from the vehicle's GPS feature, authorities said Thursday. The rented 2009 Hyundai Accent was struck in the rear by a Coaster train at 3298 Kettner Blvd. around 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Darrell Strohl.

3. A man who caused a chain-reaction crash on the freeway that killed a Marine and a young woman is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday in a Vista courtroom. Oscar Tinoco, 19, pleaded guilty last October to gross vehicular manslaughter, drunken driving and other charges. According to the California Highway Patrol, the chain of events began about 4 a.m. on Oct. 10, 2009, when a sedan rear-ended a Jeep Cherokee carrying four Marines on Interstate 15, near Gopher Canyon Road.
