Kitchen fire in Vista

Unattended cooking oil on a hot stove sparked a two-alarm blaze Sunday that displaced 17 people and caused $500,000 in damage to a Vista apartment building, fire officials said.

The blaze was reported at 11:32 a.m. at the two-story building at 971 Postal Way, near Civic Center Drive, according to Battalion Chief Ned Vander Pol of the Vista Fire Department.

San Diego mayor candidate lands endorsement

The Republican Party of San Diego County endorsed City Councilman Carl DeMaio in the city’s mayoral race.

DeMaio clinched the party’s endorsement Saturday over other major republican candidates, county District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, R-San Diego, officials said.

Pilfered Pistol at gun show

Someone apparently walked away from the Crossroads of West Gun Show with a semiautomatic .38-caliber Walther PPK and two clips each holding six bullets.

A vendor reported the pistol—James Bond’s weapon of choice in films such as Dr. No, Goldfinger and For Your Eyes Only—missing Saturday after the show closed for the day, U-T San Diego reported.
