San Diego County Beaches Reopen After Sewage Spill

The beaches were closed after last week's power outage.

1. All San Diego beaches closed as a result of sewage spills triggered by last week's massive power outage were open Thursday. Beaches from Solana Beach south through Del Mar to Scripps Pier, as well as Bayside Park in Chula Vista and the eastern shore of Silver Strand State Beach in San Diego Bay, were closed after the massive outage caused two of the city's sewer pump stations to shut down, triggering the spills, city of San Diego officials said.

2. The San Ysidro Port of Entry was reopened to vehicle travelers Thursday following the collapse of a 50-by-50-foot wooden platform. At least 11 people were injured, one seriously, when scaffolding gave way in a construction zone about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday and fell onto vehicle traffic entering the United States at the sprawling border-crossing facility on East San Ysidro Boulevard, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Federal officials immediately closed the facility to all northbound travelers until about 6:30 p.m., when the CBP began processing pedestrian traffic again. During the closure, travelers were directed to use the Otay Mesa and Tecate port of entries.

3. The guided missile frigate USS Thach will return to Naval Station San Diego Friday from a seven-month deployment to Central and South America, the Navy announced Wednesday. The 453-foot frigate took part in three multinational exercises, including one to practice defense of the Panama Canal, the Navy said. Thach sailors also took part in community relations projects in Chile and Ecuador.
