Residents Urged to 'Take Back' Prescription Drugs

The third annual National Prescription Take Back Day will take place on Saturday.

1. Public-safety officials Saturday urged residents with expired or no-longer-needed prescription drugs to help prevent drug abuse by taking part in the third annual National Prescription Take Back Day. Law enforcement agencies, military bases, hospitals, universities and businesses across the county will accept dropped-off medications—free of charge and no questions asked—from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. In Poway, residents can dropped off prescriptions drugs at the sheriff's station. For more information, click .

2.  A second autopsy done on the girlfriend of Spreckels mansion owner Jonah Shacknai is apparently aimed at clearing the air over her July suicide by hanging. Rebecca Zahau, 32, was found hanging nude July 13, with her feet and hands bound, causing some to wonder how the woman could have bound her feet and hands and committed suicide by herself. Shortly before death, Zahau learned that Shacknai's son by an earlier marriage would likely die from an injury suffered in a fall at the Coronado mansion. The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office determined Zahau committed suicide. Dr. Cyril Wecht did the examination of the body in Pittsburgh, where he is based. He said he should have something to say in about 10 days. For full coverage, visit Coronado.Patch.com

3. The USD Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate's Index of Leading Economic Indicators for San Diego County released Friday rose 0.1 percent in September. Professor Alan Gin said slight increases in help wanted advertising, local consumer confidence and the national Index of Leading Economic Indicators outweighed decreases in employment, stock prices of San Diego-based companies and the number of authorized residential building permits.
