PUSD Considers $600K in 'Sandy Hook’ Security Upgrades

Poway Unified officials are expected to consider spending $600,000 on a series of security upgrades as Phase I of its response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that killed 26 in December.

The proposed upgrades are on the agenda for Monday's PUSD board meeting, set for 6 p.m. at the district office, 15250 Avenue of Science, San Diego.

The proposed security upgrades are installing inside locks, window blinds, window tinting, perimeter fencing/gates, door chimes and panic hardware for doors and gates. The estimated costs vary across campuses, but the inside lock installation is projected to cost the most at $236,103.

After 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December, PUSD staff began reevaluating district emergency procedures. This proposal is part of that effort.

Also on the agenda:

  • The appointment of a new student board member.
  • New board policy on Facility Financing Programs.
  • 2013 Special Tax Revenue Bonds Series B Issuance.
  • Proposed revision of bullying/hate harassment policies.
