Enrique Ayon is charged with two counts of attempted murder and other charges in connection.

1. A preliminary hearing was scheduled to begin in the city of San Diego Thursday for a Lancaster man accused of opening fire along Interstate 805 and Interstate 5, wounding one person and striking two vehicles. Enrique Ayon, 24, is charged with two counts of attempted murder and other charges in connection with the seemingly random freeway attacks that took place from National City to Del Mar on Oct. 3. He was arrested in Los Angeles County nearly 24 hours later. Authorities have said they believe Ayon acted alone but the motive remains a mystery.

2. Caltrans Wednesday awarded a dozen grants totaling nearly $5 million to agencies in San Diego County to fund projects that will make it safer for children to walk or bicycle home from school. Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty said, "By improving safety, more children are encouraged to walk and bicycle to school, ultimately resulting in healthier children and less traffic congestion."

3. The Federal Aviation Administration Wednesday proposed penalizing SkyWest Airlines for allegedly operating four flights, including one from San Diego, with cargo manifests that did not comply with regulations. The FAA proposed a $160,000 fine for the commuter airline, based in St. George, Utah.
