Powegians Honor Heroes at Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

More than 100 people visited Dearborn Memorial Park for the annual celebration.

Powegians joined the rest of the nation in honoring war heroes at on Monday.

The annual event—which was organized by the Branch 70 of Navy Fleet Reserve Association in Poway and the Poway Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7907—drew more than 100 people wanting to pay tribute to those who served.

“It’s a fact that freedom is not free,” said Commander Howard Dunbar. “Throughout our history, there has been a heavy cost. Let us leave today knowing our destiny as a free people is up to us.”

Dunbar was one of a few keynote speakers who spoke of the importance of the day. The ceremony was complete with the reading of names of Poway men and women who died in combat.
