Poway High Jazz Students Make Some Noise This Afternoon
Performances will be given by nine middle and high school bands as well as the award-winning San Diego State University Jazz Ensemble
1. According to the San Diego Police Department, 27 people were arrested in Pacific Beach during a drunken driving checkpoint on Grand Avenue at Mission Bay High School on Saturday. A total of 725 cars were screened; 48 of the vehicles were held for further evaluation. Police arrested 25 people on suspicion of drunken driving, one on suspicion of felony narcotics possession and a passenger on suspicion of being drunk in public.
2. El Cajon police report that a 9-year-old boy is safely back with his mother after being taken for several hours by his father, who lost custodial rights. Anthony Cortez, 28, from El Cajon is alleged to have fired two gunshots while taking his son from his babysitter’s house on Saturday, according to police reports. He later returned the child to the mother’s residence early Sunday and was taken into custody on suspicion of kidnapping. No one was harmed in the incident.
3. The Poway High Jazz Festival is today, April 18, from 3 to 9 p.m. Nine middle and high school jazz ensembles from San Diego County will perform and the San Diego State Jazz Ensemble, winner of the National Collegiate Jazz Competition, will also give a performance. 4. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a strong wind advisory for San Diego county from noon today through Tuesday afternoon. The NWS says winds are expected to reach 35 mph with possible gusts exceeding 50 mph, making driving difficult on parts of Interstate 15 and highways 395 and 247.
