SENIORS GIVE BACK TO HELP OUR KIDS

On May 9, members of Seniors Helping Our Kids (SHOK) and Oasis Tutoring honored volunteers who have served for five, 10 and 20 years in the Poway Unified schools.

SHOK is a program that places retirees as volunteers in the Poway Unified District. Volunteers work as reading tutors (mostly in grades one, two and three) as classroom helpers, library helpers or in other ways they would like to serve. No special background is required, just the desire to help. They can pick their school, day and time. Oasis trains the tutors and puts them through a two-hour orientation where they learn how to tutor and receive supplies.

Five-year awards this year were presented to Bing Bailey, Jaque Baker, Liz Barnat, Harrison Beal, Lynn Beavers, Walt Claasen, Mary Lou Haselton, Hazel Horton, Barbara Moreau, Roy Moreau, Dorothy Newton, Leanne Packwood, Irv Sherman and Lin Siepert.

10-year awards went to John Brown, Marilyn Brown and Warren Howes.
A 20-year award was presented to Eleanor Lieb.
If you're a senior and would like to volunteer, contact Jane Radatz, director, at jradatz@att.net.

The park was filled with vendor booths, rides for the kids, food trucks and music and lots of attendees. Poway-Scripps Rotary meets Wednesdays at noon at the Brigantine in Poway. Those interested in joining are welcome. Check us out at powayrotary.org
