Pentagon Identifies Marine Killed in Afghanistan

Staff Sgt. Vincent J. Bell of Detroit died in Helmand Province on Wednesday.

1. The Pentagon released the name Friday of a 28-year-old Camp Pendleton-based Marine killed in combat in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Vincent J. Bell of Detroit died in Helmand Province on Wednesday, according to the Department of Defense. Bell was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force.

2. A U.S. Border Patrol agent who hid his illegal- immigrant father at his home in south San Diego home is scheduled to be sentenced Friday in a downtown federal courtroom. Marcos Manzano Jr. pleaded guilty in July to harboring a fugitive. His father, Marcos Manzano Sr., pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and being in the United States illegally after being deported and was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in federal prison.

3. Another round of northeast winds is expected in San Diego County this weekend. The next round of winds, which will be stronger than those felt in the region Thursday and Friday, will blow late Saturday night through Sunday in the mountains and deserts, according to the National Weather Service.
