Pentagon Announces Death of Camp Pendleton's Cpl. Gurpreet Singh
The Camp Pendleton Marine was killed in Helmand Province while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan.
1. The Pentagon Friday announced the combat death of a 21-year-old Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton, the second such casualty this week. Cpl. Gurpreet Singh, of Antelope in Sacramento County, died Wednesday from wounds received while fighting in Helmand province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense. Read the full story .
2. Emergency crews made quick work Friday of a grass fire that blackened several open acres on a hillside in a land preserve north of Santee. The blaze in Sycamore Canyon Open Space Preserve began spreading for unknown reasons about 11:15 a.m., according to Heartland Fire & Rescue.
3. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County fell 1.1 cents Friday to $3.854, the lowest since March 3. The average price is 4.6 cents less than one week ago and 22.5 cents lower than one month ago, but 73.2 cents higher than one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.
