Suspect Arrested Near Reservation After Trying to Run Over Deputy

A call about a shooting near Rincon Valley Indian Reservation ends with one man arrested and one on the loose.

Sheriff's deputies today sought a man who eluded law enforcement officers after a shooting near the Rincon Indian Reservation.

Joshua David Nelson, 21, of Valley Center, was arrested at the end of a chase in which the car he was in crashed into a ditch on a farm road shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.

The other suspect, whose name was withheld, was expected to be arrested soon. Sheriff's Capt. Mike Barnett told U-T San Diego that deputies believe they
know where he lives.

Deputies responding to a report of someone shooting into a home on Calac Road from a car spotted a vehicle matching the one used the crime and started chasing it on Valley Center Road, Barnett said.

The driver eventually crashed on a farm road, and a deputy who got out of his car nearby fired at the vehicle as the driver backed toward him, Barnett said. No one was shot.

Nelson was arrested near the car. The other man got away, despite a search of the area by about 40 law enforcement officers.

DUI Checkpoint in PB

Seven motorists were arrested during a drunken driving checkpoint in Pacific Beach, the San Diego Police Department announced Saturday.

The checkpoint was scheduled from about 10 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday on Grand Avenue next to Mission Bay High School in Pacific Beach, officer Mark McCullough said.

Officers arrested seven people for suspected drunken driving, and impounded eight vehicles during the checkpoint, McCullough said.
