Teen Shot in Mira Mesa

A 19-year-old man was shot in the leg Monday outside a party in Mira Mesa in what San Diego police said was a gang-related incident.

Witnesses told police a gang challenge was issued and four or five shots were fired in the 10000 block of Parkdale Avenue near Northrup Drive just before 2 a.m., said San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros.

The victim was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the leg that was not believed to be life-threatening, Delimitros said.

Suspected gang members with bandanas covering their faces were seen running away from the scene, he said.

Camp Pendleton Training

A joint training exercise between Marines from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and troops from the Japanese Ground Defense Force is scheduled to begin Monday at Camp Pendleton.

Throughout the exercise, dubbed Iron Fist 2012, the forces will take part in various amphibious drills, simulate a safe exit from a downed helicopter and take part in staff planning and integration exercises, officials said.

"We are excited to participate in an exercise that promotes interoperability and cooperation between JGSDF and Marine forces," said Col. Scott Campbell, the commanding officer of the 15th MEU. "This provides us the opportunity to exchange knowledge and learn from each other, as well as to establish personal and professional relationships."

The Japanese unit set to participate in the exercise is the Western Army Infantry Regiment, officials said.
