No New Cases of Whooping Cough Reported Last Week

For the first time in eight months, there were no known new cases of pertussis in which others could have been exposed in San Diego County.

1. For the first time in eight months, there were no known new cases of pertussis in which others could have been exposed in San Diego County reported last week. Public health officials say the numbers of patients with the illness, also known as whooping cough, is rising slower than last year when a record of 1,144 cases were reported and two infants died.

2. A new Star Wars exhibit is set to open at Legoland California Thursday. The exhibit, which uses more than 1.5 million Lego bricks, has been incorporated into Miniland. Those who can't make it to the Carlsbad amusement park can view the new exhibit online.

3. Ten sailors are recuperating Thursday following a fire on the carrier John C. Stennis about 100 miles off the coast of San Diego. Navy officials say the sailors were training for takeoffs and landings Wednesday afternoon when the engine of a F/A-18C Hornet malfunctioned, sparking the fire. All 10 sailors are said to be in stable condition.
