New Whooping Cough Case Brings This Year's Total to 280

There were 1,144 known cases of the disease in San Diego County last year.

1. A new reported case of pertussis brings the total number of cases in San Diego County this year to 280, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. Pertussis is commonly known as whooping cough, and can be particularly dangerous in young children. There were 1,144 known cases of the disease in San Diego County last year, including two infant deaths.

2. Two unidentified boys who brought a dead bat they found to a Petco pet store in Vista were encouraged to come forward Friday because the bat tested positive for rabies, county public health officials said. The boys brought the bat to the store at 520 Hacienda Drive last Sunday, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. Petco employees immediately contacted authorities for assistance. The bat turned out to be the fifth bat to test positive for rabies in the county so far this year, health officials said.The boys' families were encouraged to call HHSA at (619) 692-8499 to determine if they were exposed to rabies.

3. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose Thursday for the sixth consecutive day, increasing six-tenths of a cent to $3.788. The average price is 3.3 cents more than one week ago and 67.2 cents more than one year ago, but 13.7 cents less than one month ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. This is the first time the average price has risen for at least six consecutive days since an eight-day streak of increases April 29-May 6. The price had fallen 60 times in the previous 63 days before the streak of increases.
