Navy Man Killed in Four-Vehicle Crash

1. A 27-year-old Navy man was killed Thursday in a four-vehicle crash on state Route 15, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash happened at Ocean View Boulevard about 6:30 a.m., when a Jeep Cherokee lost control as it approached several other stopped vehicles preparing to enter Interstate 5. 

2. San Diego-based Sempra Energy Thursday reported third quarter earnings of $296 million, or $1.22 per diluted share, compared to $131 million, or 53 cents per diluted share, in the same period last year.

For the first three quarters of the year, the owner of San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas Co. had earnings of $1.1 billion, or $4.40 per diluted share. In the first nine months of 2010, earnings were $459 million, or $1.84 per diluted share. 

3. An abandoned "designer'' puppy whose owner couldn't afford surgery after paying $1,000 to purchase the canine at a Los Angeles pet shop was recovering Thursday, according to the San Diego County Department of Animal Services.

Parker, a beagle-Boston terrier mix, was brought to the animal shelter by a woman who said an acquaintance left the puppy with her after the canine fell and broke a leg. The owner, a young man who was contacted by Animal Services, said he couldn't pay for veterinary care, according to department officials.
