More Strong Winds Expected this Weekend

1. Another round of northeast winds is expected in San Diego County this weekend. The next round of winds, which will be stronger than those felt in the region Thursday and Friday, will blow late Saturday night through Sunday in the mountains and deserts, according to the National Weather Service.

2. A 92-year-old retired school teacher who garnered national notoriety for selling kits designed to help people commit suicide pleaded guilty in federal court today to a misdemeanor charge of failing to file a tax return. Sharlotte Hydorn will be sentenced Feb. 16 by Magistrate Judge Bernard Skomal.

3. A new computer model developed in part by scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography are giving researchers better insight into the formation of the Andes Mountains in South America, Scripps announced Friday. Previous theories of plate tectonics left unanswered a number of questions about the the world's longest mountain range, according to an article that appears in the Dec. 1 edition of Nature.
