Memorial Day Weekend Drunken Driving Arrests Up in County

The California Highway Patrol reports 51 drunken driving arrests.

1. Local, state and federal government offices throughout San Diego County will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

2. Five people were arrested for drunken driving Sunday at a checkpoint staffed by officers from throughout the county. Officers from the Sheriff's Department, Probation Department, and San Diego, Chula Vista, National City and Coronado police stations conducted this multi-agency checkpoint in Imperial Beach last night, Chula Vista Police spokesman Bernard Gonzales said.

3. San Diego County experienced a sharp increase in Memorial Day drunken driving arrests from 2010 to 2011, the California Highway Patrol reported Sunday. The reporting period began last night at 6:01 p.m. and ended this morning at 6:00 a.m., CHP spokesman Jesse Udovich said. This year, the CHP reported 51 drunken driving arrests and no fatalities while last year's checkpoint garnered 26 arrests and one fatality, Udovich said. There was a decrease in drunken driving arrests statewide, with 897 this year compared with  1,029 in 2010.
