Man Arrested for Firing Gun on New Year’s Eve

A man was jailed for ringing in the new year the wrong way.

Gunfire erupts at the clock nears midnight

A Santee man was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully firing a gun on New Year’s Eve, and authorities got reports of celebratory gunfire or fireworks in Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach and Chula Vista.

The suspect arrested in Santee, at some apartments on East Bradley Avenue about 7:30 p.m., was jailed, but sheriff’s deputies did not make public his name. About 10 shots reportedly were fired. Unlawfully discharging a gun, which can be filed as a felony, is punishable by a jail term.

About 10 p.m., other reports of gunfire started coming in, but authorities reported no injuries associated with the gunfire. In South Los Angeles, a bullet fired into the air came through the roof of a home and wounded a man in a leg.

Sheriff’s deputies reported gunfire or fireworks being heard around midnight in several unincorporated San Diego County areas.

Big surf on the way

A pair of large storms in the North Pacific may generate strong surf or coastal flooding along the beaches of San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles counties next week, the National Weather Service warned today.

On Tuesday, beaches that are susceptible to northwest swells, like Mission and Ocean beaches, may see wave sets of 6-8 feet, with occasional 10-foot breakers.

East County Aftershock

A magnitude 3.2 aftershock struck the Imperial Valley and eastern San Diego County Saturday, according to automated seismographs and computers operated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The aftershock was centered about 29 miles south-southeast of Mexicali, or about 120 miles east-southeast of downtown San Diego. It hit at 11:14 a.m. and was one of dozens of quakes that rattled East County Saturday.
