LA Times Predicts Chargers Headed North

Spokeswoman for San Diego mayor says they're still working to build a stadium that would keep the team in town.

1. The city of San Diego and the San Diego Chargers are continuing to work together on a new downtown stadium, a spokeswoman for the
mayor's office said Wednesday.

The statement came on a day in which articles appeared in the Los Angeles Times speculating that the Chargers is the team most likely to move to a proposed new stadium in Los Angeles.

“We continue to work with the Chargers on a funding plan for a stadium,” Laing said. “Our discussions have been complicated by the
elimination of redevelopment funds, but the mayor is committed to trying to reach a stadium deal that works for the community and will have the public’s support.”

Because of recently enacted changes to redevelopment in California, the kind of money needed to finance a stadium is not expected to be available through that process for years, if ever again.

2. The North County Transit District will use a pair of $25 million grants to install a GPS-based train safety system along the San Diego County coastal rail corridor. The Positive Train Control Equipment, to be installed from San Diego to San Onofre, will enhance safety and efficiency by monitoring the trains and controlling their movements, according to Caltrans.

That stretch of track is shared by Amtrak, the NCTD's Coaster and Santa Fe freight trains. It is part of the second-busiest rail corridor in the Amtrak system.

The system is being funded with a $25 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration, which will be matched by state Proposition 1A rail bond funds.

3. Jack in the Box Inc. today reported net earnings of $18.7 million, or 38 cents per diluted share, in the third quarter of its fiscal year, which ended July 10. In the same period last year, the company recorded net earnings of $24.2 million, or 44 cents per diluted share. A 6.5 percent increase in food costs, and higher expenses for equipment such as new menu boards, offset gains in foot traffic, according to the company.
