International Study Finds Species Migratory Highways off San Diego Coast
A decade of research has found that two distinct currents attract a plethora of species from across the Pacific Ocean.
1. Two new ocean pathways may need to be added to Southern California maps, as a major scientific study released this week shows two distinct migratory routes in the Pacific Ocean that intersect off the San Diego coast. A 12-year-long tagging study of predatory fish and sharks -- and the fatty marine mammals that they prefer to eat -- "reveals how migrations and habitat preferences overlap,'' giving scientists "a remarkable picture of critical marine life pathways and habitats,'' according to a study summary. 2. A man charged with planning to attack a military recruiting station in Seattle grew up in San Diego, tried to kill himself at age 12 and was later placed in a group home, it was reported Saturday. Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif, 33, a converted Muslim also known as Joseph Anthony Davis, was charged Thursday along with a Los Angeles man, Walli Mujahidh, 32, on allegations they bought machine guns and grenades from a police informant with plans to storm a recruiting center in Seattle.
3. Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is set to hold a fundraiser for his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination at a La Jolla home Sunday in his first visit to San Diego since declaring his candidacy. Tickets for a two-hour reception are $1,000 per person, while the price for a ticket for a half-hour "VIP reception'' is $2,500. Read the full story .
