Heat Wave Expected this Fourth of July Weekend

County residents should expect triple-digit temperatures this weekend.

1. Triple-digit temperatures were in store for San Diego County this Fourth of July weekend, forecasters said. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will remain above average through the middle of next week, then gradually cool toward the end of next week. During the peak of the heat wave, which will officially begin Saturday, highs will be in the mid-90s to 105 in the inland valleys, 102 to 112 in the upper deserts, and 108 to 116 in the lower deserts, forecasters said. The good news is that a shallow marine layer will keep areas near the coast cooler, with highs expected to be in the 70s at the beaches and 85 to 95 in inland coastal areas and lower coastal valleys.

2. Outgoing San Diego State University President Stephen Weber said Thursday he hopes the public doesn't saddle successor Eliott Hirshman with expectations that he will immediately solve the school's funding crisis. The state budget signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown Thursday cut spending for the California State University system by $650 million, $150 million more than expected. Weber said administrators found ways to deal with SDSU's share of the initial $500 million reduction, but there weren't any remaining ideas for compensating for further cutbacks.

3. Freedom Station, which provides services to disabled military veterans, was named Thursday as the official charity of this year's
Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. The announcement was made at a luncheon, at which the late G.E. "Vinnie'' Vinson, the Holiday Bowl's first president, former Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington and former Texas quarterback Major Applewhite were inducted into the Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame.
