Gas Prices Rise to Highest Amount Since 2008

The average price of a gallon of self-serve is 58.7 cents above what it was one year ago.

1. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose Friday to its highest amount since Oct. 8, 2008, increasing 2.3 cents to $3.525. The average price is 10 cents more than a week ago, 18.1 cents higher than one month ago and 58.7 cents above what it was one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

2. Around 4,000 sailors and Marines will deploy next week to the western Pacific Ocean and Middle Eastern waters, the Navy announced Thursday. The Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, made up of the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer, amphibious transport dock ship USS Green Bay and amphibious dock landing ship USS Comstock, will depart Naval Station San Diego on Tuesday.

3. One year after racial strife at UC San Diego made national headlines, administrators Thursday touted progress in improving the campus climate, but students said racial incidents continue to occur. The number of applications by minority high school seniors to UCSD last fall jumped 27 percent, and transfer applications from under-represented students climbed 19 percent, said Mae Brown, assistant vice chancellor for admissions at the university.
