Gas Prices Rise Again

The average price of gasoline rose for the second time in 45 days.

1. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego County rose a half-cent Tuesday to $3.891, the second increase in 45 days. Despite the slight increase, the average price is 4.1 cents less than one week ago and 24.4 cents lower than one month ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

2. Traffic accidents are 36 percent more likely to involve deaths or severe injuries when even a small amount of alcohol is present in a driver's system, according to a UC San Diego study released Monday. Researchers David Phillips and Kimberly Brewer looked at nearly 1.5 million fatal traffic accidents in the United States between 1994 and 2008 to arrive at the figure.

3. The first birth of a gorilla at the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park in nearly 11 years was announced Monday. Kokamo, a 22-year-old that came to the park from Oklahoma, had her baby on Friday night. The birth is important because the western gorilla species is critically endangered, according to zoo officials.
