Bridge Jumper ID'd

Authorities Saturday released the name of a 23-year-old woman who was fatally injured when she jumped from an overpass into the path of a car on Interstate 805 in Kearney Mesa.

Witnesses saw a woman jump from the southern side of the Balboa Avenue bridge and land in a southbound lane of Interstate 805 about 12:55 p.m. Friday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Officer.

The woman was later identified as Karla Gallo.

She was struck by a 2010 Toyota Prius registered to a Los Angeles resident, and that driver was not injured, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Art Athans.

Athans said it was unclear if Gallo died as a result of the fall or from being struck by the car. The Medical Examiner's Office has yet to release her cause of death.

Three of the freeway's four main southbound lanes remained closed for about 90 minutes following the incident, Athans said.

USS Bonhomme Richard to Leave San Diego

The Navy's 844-foot amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard will steam out San Diego Feb. 14 on deployment to the western Pacific en route to its new homeport in Japan.

The 40,500-ton ship, which played a big role in the war in Iraq, was hauled out for repairs at the General Dynamics-NASSCO shipyard last year.

After a deployment to the western Pacific, the ship will be homeported in Sasebo, Japan, relieving the USS Essex. The "Bonne" will become the command ship in Expeditionary Strike Group 7.

The crews will swap ships, with the crew of the Bonhomme Richard returning to San Diego on the Essex, which is scheduled to be hauled at NASSCO next. The crews number about 1,800 each.
