Eagle Fire Caused by Arson, Investigators Say

The fire has scorched more than 14,000 acres in northeastern San Diego County.

1. Fire investigators have determined that the fire which has scorched more than 14,000 acres in northeastern San Diego County was caused by arson. The Eagle fire broke out last Thursday on the Los Coyotes Indian Reservation and has caused injuries to 14 firefighter. The blaze is about 65 percent contained Thursday morning, with full control expected Saturday. Cal Fire says that fighting the fire has cost more than $11 million.

2. Grieving family members and friends will gather today at a church in 4S Ranch to bid farewell to a child-abuse detective and her 18-year-old daughter. Both were slain last week in their Rancho Penasquitos home allegedly by the policewoman's mentally ill son. Donna Williams was 52 and had served with the San Diego Police Department for 31 years. Her youngest offspring was Briana, a 2011 graduate of Mount Carmel High School. Brian Rockwell Williams is in

3. The snakebit Mercury Insurance Open women's tennis tournament had another top player withdraw Wednesday, organizers said. Defending singles champion Svetlana Kuznetsova pulled out because of a groin injury and will be replaced by Vania King, an American player ranked 88th in the women's tennis rankings. King was a doubles champion at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open last year. Qualifying begins Saturday at the La Costa Resort & Spa, while the main draw starts on Monday.
