Dumanis Files Civil Suit to Overturn Schwarzenegger's Reduction of Sentence

San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis filed a civil suit to nullify the commutation of the prison sentence of Esteban Nunez.

1. San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis filed a civil suit Wednesday seeking to nullify former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's commutation of a 16-year prison sentence for an ex-Assembly leader's son, who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in a young man's stabbing death at San Diego State University. Esteban Nunez—son of former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez—also pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon for attacking three other men during a fight in the early morning hours of Oct. 4, 2008.

2. The San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board voted 6-0 Wednesday to require operators of over-water fireworks displays to apply for an annual permit and prove they have cleaned up debris. The requirements are not as onerous as those first proposed last year, which had organizers monitoring the affected water and sediment for pollutants, said David Barker, a supervising engineer for the agency.

3. A discovery about the production of glucose might lead to a new class of medication for diabetes patients, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies announced Wednesday. Researchers found that enzymes called histone deacetylases, or HDACs, kick-start glucose production after a period of fasting or at night, when levels in the blood run low.
