DOD Announces Deaths of Two Marines in Afghanistan

Staff Sgt. Nicholas A. Sprovtsoff and Sgt. Christopher Diaz were killed Wednesday.

1. The Department of Defense Saturday announced the deaths of two California-based Marines killed while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Staff Sgt. Nicholas A. Sprovtsoff, 28, of Davison, Mich., and Sgt. Christopher Diaz, 27, of Albuquerque, N.M., were killed Wednesday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, according to the Department of Defense. Read the full story on .

2. A brush fire charred about 960 acres near the Shelter Valley community Saturday, Cal Fire said. The blaze was reported about 12:55 p.m. and the cause remained under investigation, according to Cal Fire spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik. The blaze broke out on the south side of state Route 78, near Scissors Crossing, where Route 78 intersects Great Southern Overland Route of 1849. Read the full story on .

3. An off-duty San Diego police officer was one of two people killed in a series of crashes involving several vehicles Saturday on a San Diego freeway, authorities said. Officer Jason Prokop, 34, was traveling south on Interstate 15 in a 2011
Mazda 6 about 3:05 a.m. when he crashed into 1992 Honda Accord which was stopped for an unknown reason south of Mira Mesa Boulevard, according to police and the California Highway Patrol. Both vehicles were heavily damaged. Read the full story on .
