Defense Department Reports Death of Camp Pendleton Marine

Sgt. Chad D. Frokjer, 27, of Maplewood, MN, died June 30 while participating in combat operations.

1. San Diego area lifeguards prepared Saturday for a busy Independence Day weekend due in part to triple-digit temperatures in parts of the county. Temperatures in East and North County were expected to reach more than 100 degrees, which prompted area residents to flock to the beach. There. they could expect water temperatures of 65-68 degrees and a surf height of up to 3 feet, according to data from the National Weather Service.

2. A magnitude 3.3 aftershock struck the Imperial Valley and eastern San Diego County Saturday, according to automated seismographs and computers operated by the U.S. Geological Survey. The aftershock was centered about 30 miles southeast of Mexicali, or about 128 miles east-southeast of San Diego. It hit at 3:25 p.m.

3. The Department of Defense Saturday announced the combat death of a 27-year-old Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton. Sgt. Chad D. Frokjer, of Maplewood, Minn., died Thursday from wounds sustained while fighting in Helmand province, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense. Read the full story .
