Crews Continue to Battle Eagle Fire

The fire was 45 percent contained as of Monday night.

1. Firefighters worked for a fifth straight day Tuesday to gain control over a brush fire that has scorched some 12,700 acres in the North County. The Eagle Fire was 45 percent contained as of Monday night, according to Cal Fire. Six firefighters have suffered minor injuries and one outbuilding has been destroyed since the fire broke out late Thursday roughly five miles east of Warner Springs, the state agency reported. The estimated cost of fighting the blaze has risen to $6.2 million.

2. Gov. Jerry Brown Monday signed a San Diego lawmaker's bill giving California schoolchildren a 30-day grace period for getting up-to-date with their whooping cough vaccinations. Beginning July 1, students entering grades 7-12 in California are supposed to prove they are fully immunized against the illness, also known as pertussis.

3. It was the U.S. Navy to the rescue today for a Scripps Ranch couple who lost their garage door-sized U.S. flag in a downright un- American crime the day after the Fourth of July. Capt. Rich McDaniel of the USS Sterett presented Tim Curran -- himself a captain with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department -- and his wife, Debby, with a replacement flag aboard the San Diego-ported guided-missile destroyer.
