County Firefighters to Participate in 12th Annual Firefighter Boot Drive

The funds will go toward the Burn Institute's programs.

1. The 12th annual Firefighter Boot Drive to collect money for the Burn Institute will take place Wednesday. Firefighters at stations and major intersections around the county will take donations at various stations during the morning and afternoon commutes. More than $210,000 was raised last year. The money funds fire and burn education programs, and survivor support programs like Camp Beyond the Scars for children ages 5-17.

Major locations include Front and Ash streets downtown, Rosecrans Street at Midway Drive; Paseo del Norte at Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad; Olympic Parkway, E. H Street and Telegraph Canyon Road all at the 805 freeway in Chula Vista; Via Rancho Parkway at Interstate 15 and Broadway at state Route 78 in Escondido; and Mission Gorge Road at Cuyamaca Street in Santee. Other locations are available online at burninstitute.org.

2. The average price of gasoline in San Diego County rose Wednesday for the 13th time in 14 days, increasing a half-cent to $4.069 for a gallon of regular self-serve, the highest since Aug. 9, 2008. The average price is 3.2 cents higher than a week ago, 17.1 cents above what it was one month ago and 96.3 cents greater than it was one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

3. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Wednesday to have staff extend for two more years the amount of time victims of the 2003 Cedar Fire have to transfer their property tax base. Owners of property destroyed by the massive wildfire can acquire a comparable piece of land and use their 2003 property taxes as a base for their new land. The ordinance allows them to avoid the increase in property tax that people normally are hit with when they buy a new house.
