Cold Pacific Storms Expected This Week

According to the NWS, a series of cold Pacific storms originating in the Gulf of Alaska will move through the region.

1. Starting Tuesday, much colder and unsettled weather is expected to return to San Diego County. According to the National Weather Service, a series of cold Pacific storms originating in the Gulf of Alaska will move through the region through Thursday. Highs are expected to drop to as much as 30 degrees below average for this time of year. Forecasters say up to 2-inches of rain is also possible before fairer weather returns Friday.

2. Firefighters continue to battle a 2,000 brush fire in the Julian area Monday morning. According to Cal Fire, the so-called Great Fire broke out Saturday and is 25 percent contained Monday morning. Authorities say residents east and south of the mountaintop resort should make sure that they're ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. About two dozen structures are threatened. 3. A geneticist at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla won the Nobel Prize in physiology and medicine Monday, along with two other scientists. Bruce Beutler, 53, learned that he had won the prize for his groundbreaking work in immunology via a cell phone message early this morning, after the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden made the announcement at 2:30 a.m. Pacific time.
