City of Poway Nominated for Golden Fleece Award

San Diego County Taxpayers Association will announce a winner on May 19.

1. Two state parks in North County were included Friday on a list of 70 locations around California slated for closure because of budget cuts. Palomar Mountain State Park and San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park could be shut down in July 2012, according to state parks officials.

2. The City of Poway is a finalist for a Golden Fleece Award, the San Diego County Taxpayers Association announced Friday. The city was nominated for its "Water Policy Rolling Downhill." A winner will be announced on Thursday, May 19.

3. The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health recommended to a state agency today that developers of the proposed Gregory Canyon landfill be granted a solid waste facility permit. The project near Valley Center has been in the works for a couple of decades but the developers have had to ward off stiff opposition regarding feared traffic and environmental impacts. The landfill is sited on about 300 acres along state Route 76, east of Interstate 15.
