Former Marine Sentenced to Life for 1975 Murder

Leon Johnson was given seven years to life in prison on Friday.

1. A former Camp Pendleton Marine convicted of raping and strangling a masseuse in a city of San Diego massage parlor almost 36 years ago was sentenced Friday to seven years to life in prison. Leon Johnson, 58, was given the sentence that was in effect at the time of the Nov. 22, 1975 killing of 27-year-old Angelina Luz Borrayo. Johnson already was serving a life prison term for murdering a 55-year-old store clerk in Mississippi in 1982 when he was returned to California for prosecution in the Borrayo case. He was connected to the San Diego case through a national DNA database.

2. The animal rights organization, In Defense of Animals Friday called on the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 21-year-old African elephant at the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park. Zookeepers found Umoya, a mother of two brought to San Diego from Swaziland in 2003, lying down in the elephant exhibit shortly before the park opened on Thursday, according to the zoo's Christina Simmons.

3. Five suspected undocumented immigrants were rescued from a remote beach in the Sunset Cliffs area today and taken into custody along with more than a dozen others found on the grounds of a nearby college, authorities said. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified shortly before 8 a.m. about a group of people in distress in a motorboat in the Point Loma area, Petty Officer 1st Class Allyson Conroy said.
